In 1954 Popular Mechanics showed this picture predicting what the home computer of 2004 would look like. Dead on - like most future predictions of the future :) As I talked about in Straight Line Thinking people seem unable to think about the future in anyway that is different from the past experiences that we have. People are innately creative and solutions to "problems" that face us today are not obvious to us at all. That's why all of the horror stories about global warming make me laugh. In 1900 the "realists" predicted streets full of horse manure, causing disease and death. I'm still waiting for the Skycar to be commercial - it's been over 20 years since scientists told me that it was nearly ready for sale.
